4)The agony of widowhood Lonely days relates to the agonies of widowhood; it shows the effects of unjust widowhood rites and rituals in women. Yareli, Fayoyin, Radeke and Dedewe all suffer maltreatment and deprivations because they are widows. The loss of a loved one is demoralizing on its own, adding unwarranted punishments to its simply unreasonable. Widows suffer discrimination and marginalization. They are made to sing dirges and confess sins that they did not commit. Fayoyin, for instance , is made to lick libation and sing a dirge. The people sprinkle cold water on her head to make it easier for the barber to shave her hair . Fayoyin’s appearance is terribly altered after the hair- shaving episode. Decree is also made to confess her sins; she is forced to sit beside her husband’s corpse inside a dark room.

Mary Dalton is the female heiress of Dalton’s estate whose death leads to Bigger Thomas, self discovery.May is an adventurous female charcter with a communist orientation.Her role as a girlfriend to Jan Earlone helps the reader understands the role played by communist referred to as “reds” in the civil right movement.During her first meeting with Bigger Mary treats Bigger has her equal.This upsets Bigger who share a racially biasedviews of the societynaround him.Bigger’s hatred for the oppressive white society makes him harbour hatred towards Mary who also refers to her father as “capitalist” in his presence.Mary’s role as a succour provider for Bigger is interpreted by Bigger as an insult.After Mary drives,Mary and her boy friend Jan Erlone around town and they make Bigger drive them to a black neigbourhood where they eat at Ernie’s kitchen making Bigger embarassed as some of his negro friends see him in the company of white folks.Bigger feel humiliated despite Mary’s treatment and after Bigger initially refuses to leave the car,mary begins to sob but is consoled by Jan.After Bigger drives Mary home Bigger tries to carry the drunken Mary up the stairs and as the body crushed against each other Bigger is sexually aroused and as Bigger places her on the bed he hears Mary blind mother approach the home out of fear,Bigger covers Mary,s face with apillow and inadventently kills her in the process.Mary’s death in the novel leads to Bigger’s self discovery

The readers are mad to know different things that have taken place in the past prior to the time setting of the work and this is achieved by the introduction of the character of Jerome into the fiction. Instances of flash back in the prose as aided by the trio include;
One, the way and manner by which the rulership of Otranto falls to the family Of Don Ricardo, the grandfather of Manfred is made known through the interaction between Manfred and Frederic Marquis. Two, the fact that Fredric was prisoner to the infidels was revealed by Frederic in the prose. How the Marquis family comes about the enormous Are from underneath the earth on the instruction of a dying man in the wood is also revealed through flash back. Also, through the instrument of flashback, Theodore traces his parentage and his helps to link Him to the royal house of Otranto.
Also, father Jerome supplies a flashback of how Alfonso was shipwrecked and eventually got married to one Victoria who eventually got pregnant and gave birth to a daughter for him but after he (Alfonoso) had died. The daughter eventually became the wide of lord Jerome and their union produced their son, Theodore
